Here you find information which are only valid for UniMail.
In "Usage notes for UniMail and mailserver" you find information valid for both services.
Under "organizatorial notes" you get further information and advices to these and other points, especially to brochures, contact persons, deadline, etc. which show the present state. Please look there if a information about organizatorial aspects is missing or not detailled enough.
With activation of the UniMail-service two technically different services are available to you. They are linked organizationally, but are to be seen independent from each other:
You can change your password by using a special functions, which is also accessible over the UniMail-mainpage. The passwordchange is also valid for the dial-in nodes and the access to the intranet. Which service are affected and when the changes do take place is described by the function itself.
Please notice:
If you have saved the password in the setup of different programms the
new password has to be inserted at the right point of time.
Due to security concerns password and/or accountnames will not communicated vy telephone any longer. The possibility to identify yourself with help of you passwordphrase has been disabled.
To get a new password you have to visit the customer's office of the ITMC in person and show your identity card and, as a student you must also show your enrollment certificate (e.g. your student's ID).
Employees
of the TU Dortmund can also receive their accountname and passwort by
mail to their business address, please request your new data per e-mail
using this
contakt-address (service.itmc at tu-dortmund.de?subject=Zusendung%20der%20Zugangsdaten%20an%20Dienstadresse)
.
Former affiliates of the university get a mail to an address which has to be named. Please send you request with naming your postal address to this
contakt-address (service.itmc at tu-dortmund.de?subject=Zusendung%20der%20Zugangsdaten%20an%20ehemalige%28n%29%20Angehoerige%28n%29)
.
Important notice for students: For some time now the password and accountname are not only printed on the data sheet of your first semester but also on the following. As soon as you activate your account this password is not valid anymore but the one you use for UniMail etc.
| incoming mail server (POP/IMAP): | unimail.uni-dortmund.de |
| (1)outgoing mail server (SMTP): | unimail.uni-dortmund.de |
| user-/accountname: | (2)<Your-Uni-Account> |
| E-Mail-Adress (outgoing address, From) |
<Mail-Alias-Adresse>@tu-dortmund.de respectively. ...@udo.edu |
| Reply-to address | like E-Mail-Adresse |
Legend:
(1) possible problems sending mail using an external access from other dial-in nodes than from the university:
If the SMTP-authentification fails the mail-transfer can be refused. Depending on the used mailprogramm a further setup is necessary. Some programms are not able to use that function Further information can be found under "hints concerning forwarding problems".
(2) <Your-Uni-Account> was communicated to you per mail or marked on your data sheet and has the form of <mxxxxxxx> or <smxxxxxx>. This is not your mailaddress.
The mailbox is a real mailbox which is technically named after your account's name. The mailaddress is realized by a Mail-Alias, pointing to this mailbox. Incoming mails to this address are automatically send to your mailbox.
Outgoing mails do not show the mailaddress (due to technical issues) but the real name of the mailbox. To show the e-mail address the e-mail address (from) and the reply-to address has to be filled in like mentioned above.
Using the webmailer, these setting are made during the activation process. If you want to change this or fill in more e-mail addresses, you find some presettings in the header under the point "Optionen" (options) and then "Persönliche Informationen" (personal information). Two identities are pre-configured, @tu-dortmund.de and @udo.edu.
The university provices several dial-in nodes which are partly only usable in connection with other services. Using the uni-account you are only authorized to us the dial-in nodes which are summed up under the name UniDo-Access. At the moment these are:
uni@home and DFN@home
Using these dial-in noedes your connection belongs to the domain of the university what may be an advantage in some cases. You can, for example, access the intranet sites or send e-mails by IMAP/POP without having problems and having a look at the setting of your mailprogramm.
These dial-in nodes are based on cooperation contracts with external providers and are chargable. Wether you use the dial-in nodes of the university or of other providers is left to your in descretion. The pricing modells differ a lot and can be changed dependend on the market situation. Compare the fees again and again regarding your needs. Please notice that you need to be in the intranet of the TU Dortmund to use the some of the services. If necessary you have to use a VPN-connection.
Recommendation:
You can configure several dial-in connections in a parallel way and then use it alternately - depending on which is at a certain point of time cheaper. This has the advantage that during technical problems of a provider a connection of another provider can be used as backup.
The service of UniDo-Access is the organizatorial form under which the usage authorization for the dial-in nodes uni@home and DFN@home are managed. These usage authorization within the framework of UniMail enables you to use both dial-in nodes with one accountname and password. The accountname and password are the ones which are used for the access to your mailbox. The access to uni@home is usable directly after the activation with your communicated accountname and password. For DFN@home a registration at the provider is necessary before the first usage.
Further information about telephne numbers, dial-in configurations and configuration examples can be found under "network-access". If you experience technical problems please contact the service mentioned there.
Note:
UniDo-Access has emerged from the former service DOSiS-Access and was renamed mainly because of orgaizatorial reasons. Telephone numbers and technical things did not change.
